Broadwindsor School is committed to ensuring our pupils achieve the best possible outcomes. Good school attendance is key to achieving this aim. We work hard to provide a safe and welcoming environment for your child and will monitor attendance closely.
However, if your child is clearly unwell then please carefully consider if it is appropriate for them to be in school. It can be quite distressing for the pupil concerned and for other class members and staff to have a child in school who is clearly unwell – home is always best under these circumstances. You will need to let the school office know of your child’s absence from the first day of illness. Messages can be left on the office phoneline: 01308 868376.
Should your child become unwell during the school day it is very important that we have a contact number that is current and relevant. Every attempt will be made to contact you should the need arise.
From time to time children are sick (vomit) or have diarrhoea either at home or at school. At Broadwindsor we follow the NHS’s ’48 hour’ guidance that:
Children with diarrhoea or vomiting should stay away from school until they have not been sick or had diarrhoea for at least 2 days (48 hours).
If you are not sure please check the NHS quick guide: Should I keep my child off school? flyer.

Good school attendance improves your child’s chances of success in life. There is clear evidence of the link between good attendance at school and high levels of achievement. Children with no absence at Key Stage 4 are almost 2 times more likely to achieve 5 or more GCSEs than children who missed 10-15 percent of lessons. If your child has an attendance level of only 90%, they will have missed one day a fortnight in school. Over a school year this will represent four weeks of absence.
| What does the attendance percentage really mean? (over a full academic year) | |
| Attendance | Days Lost |
| 100 % | 0 days |
| 97% | 1 week |
| 94% | 2 weeks |
| 90% | 4 weeks |
| 85% | 6 weeks |
| 80% | 8 weeks |
