Intent
At Broadwindsor Primary School, we intend that our pupils develop a love and enthusiasm for Design Technology and knowledge of how it is used in the world around them. When our students leave Broadwindsor School, we aim for them to have…
- Knowledge of how to use and select equipment and tools, doing this safely and with confidence
- A range of baking and cooking techniques, alongside an awareness of the principles of healthy eating and seasonality
- The practical skills to create textile objects
- The ability to use electronics and computing skills to create movement and light
- Design skills which have the user in mind, using prototypes and art skills
- Knowledge of inspirational designers though history
- An ability to evaluate and improve the products they have designed
Implementation
Design and Technology at Broadwindsor is taught for an hour a week as a half-termly block (alternating with Art and Design), often making links to other curriculum areas. Each pupil will experience designing, making, evaluating and using technical knowledge in each topic. They will work in a range of contexts, for instance the school, gardens, the playground, leisure, culture and industry, the local community and the wider environment.
There is a clear progression of skills to be covered, starting in the Early Years Foundation Stage, moving through to Key Stage One and finally to Key Stage 2.
Impact
We will measure the impact of our Design and Technology curriculum by listening to pupil discussion and responses, and by our own evaluation of pupils’ work at all stages of the design process. We will use ICT to record images of the children’s practical learning. Teachers will meet to discuss progress across the year groups in relation to our Progression of Skills document and will plan opportunities to share and celebrate work, for example through a whole school exhibition to show the progression of skills and processes throughout the school.
